Grieving and Facing Your Loss

The passing on of a loved one is usually a painful experience for many. However we can find comforting thoughts by accepting that our earthly life as we have come to see it, is simply a transition. A passing through which like every journey has to come to an end.

Life as a Transition

To help you understand how life is a transition, think of a huge marketplace. It is bubbling with a throng of people from all different places. People are coming and going, buying and selling, passing through and stopping ocassionally at different stands.

These people mingle, chat to one another, interact with each other. But sooner or later, each person will have to leave to go back to where they came from...to their home!

This is exactly what happens on our earth. You, I and everyone else, we came to this plane to learn, grow and mature through our various activities and interactions with each other. We meet people with whom we bond and learn to love. We raise families given to us through the grace of our Creator.

Unfortunately along the way, we forget that our time on earth is a time of grace and mercy. That, as in the case of the marketplace metaphor, sooner or later, we will have to go back to where we came from...our home. This is a fact which we often suppress or ignore.

The pain of loss

There is an aspect of losing a loved one which renders our pain unbearable beyond words, making it mostly difficult to let go and heal.

Consider this: as in the above-mentioned metaphor of the marketplace, why do you find it easy and perhaps even a relief to go back to your own home after wandering about on the streets? There is a similar scenario as in a normal daily life: you meet people, talk to and interact with them etc., and yet, you are able to say thank you and goodbye, without feeling any sense of loss. Despite not knowing whether or not you'll ever see them again.

Yes, you've guessed it. There are no emotional ties. It is the natural emotional bond which have grown between you and your loved ones over the years that renders the loss you feel very painful to bear. This emotional tie is the love and affection you feel for the person who had been with you and now has suddenly gone and left you behind.

Love is the strongest emotional force we can feel for anyone. The energy force of love has been known and well documented to heal and to perform wonders on subtle levels such as changing some chemical reactions in the body.

So you see, it is natural to feel your grief and the pain of your loss. In the initial stages of your loss, be gentle with yourself. Take the time you require to sort through your feelings and experiences without labelling them. If need be, talk to someone and seek support from people you are close to.

When my mother passed on over 4 years ago, what helped me mostly were two things. The ability to share feelings with my siblings, whom I share close bonds with, and my early morning contemplations wth the Grail Message: In the Light of Truth.

To regain inner strength to heal, find a path of healing which works best for you. It could be through meditative writing, reading various inspiring books on life and death to open your soul or the Bible.

Try to remain inwardly open, conscious of your own abilitiy to surpass the transient happening.
